Activities:

Sorting:
Materials:  jellybeans (or other candy with the color black)
Description:  Give your toddler a handful for jellybeans and help them sort them into color groups.  Put all the blacks together, all the red together, all the greens together etc.  When they are finished sorting, count each group and talk about what group has more and less.  You can extend this activity by drawing several oval shapes onto a piece of paper.  Have your toddler color each oval the same colors as the jellybeans that they have.  Now, they can place all the black jellybeans on the black oval, all the red jellybeans on the red oval etc.
Skills Targeted:  sorting, counting, understand more or less, compare and contrast, develop beginning math skills, color recognition

Black Art Project:
Materials:  different color crayons, black crayon, paper, toothpick or sharpened pencil
Description:  Have your toddler color a piece of white paper with a variety of different colors (except black).  Encourage them to color dark and to fill the whole piece of paper so that you can't see any white color.  (you could cut the paper to make it smaller if your toddler is having a hard time filling the whole piece of paper).  As your child uses each different color ask them to name the color they are using.  Once the whole paper is colored, have your toddler use a black crayon and color over the entire piece of paper, covering all of the colors.  Last, use a toothpick or sharpened pencil to write shapes, designs, letters etc into the black colored paper.  As your little ones writes with the sharpened edge, the different colors with show through.  It makes for a really neat art project.
Skills Targeted:  motor skill development, color recognition, encourage creativity
